Abstract

Writing coherent narratives is a persistent challenge in elementary classrooms when instruction provides limited opportunities to generate ideas, organize events, and discuss texts. This study examined changes in fourth-grade students’ Indonesian narrative-writing achievement during classroom action research integrating group discussion with audiovisual instructional media. The study involved 15 students at SD Negeri 098160 Sihaporas, Indonesia, and comprised two cycles conducted on November 8 and 14, 2024. Each cycle followed planning, action, observation, and reflection. Students interpreted sequenced visual stories, discussed ideas in small groups, and composed narrative texts; the second cycle strengthened audiovisual presentation, group organization, and opportunities to present and evaluate writing. Descriptive analysis of the recorded student scores showed that the class mean increased from 60.60 in Cycle I to 77.47 in Cycle II. The proportion meeting the score-table mastery threshold of 60 rose from 66.67% (10/15) to 93.33% (14/15). All 15 recorded scores improved between cycles. These findings indicate positive classroom-level improvement associated with iterative instructional refinement, while the absence of a control group and standardized assessment evidence limits causal interpretation and generalizability.
